Roller Blinds vs Shutters
Both roller blinds and shutters can provide an attractive and functional window dressing: the challenge for homeowners is to work out which is going to be best for their interior. Here we consider the roller blinds vs shutters debate, taking a look at the key similarities and differences between the two, as well as suggest which is going to be most appropriate for your property.
What's the difference between roller blinds and shutters?
There are two main differences between roller blinds and shutters: the way in which they are attached and their ability to move.
Roller blinds are hung from fixings at the top of the window frame. The actual blind hangs freely down the length of the window. In comparison, shutters are rigid structures that are fixed to the sides of the interior or exterior of the window frame.
A blind can be adjusted so that it covers some, or all of the window, or can be rolled upwards so that the entire window is revealed. If a slatted (Venetian) blind is used, the angle of the slats can be altered to allow varying degrees of light to penetrate. Shutters may be open or shut. If shut, modern shutters have adjustable slats, which work in the same way as a Venetian blind.
Advantages of Shutters
Like any other window dressing, shutters do offer a number of benefits:
- When it comes to privacy, shutters provide a permanent, effective solution. The louvres in shutters are angled so that light can still penetrate, whilst still ensuring the interior remains hidden. If your windows face directly onto a pavement or walkway, or you are in an overlooked location, interior shutters can be a good alternative.
- Due to the materials from which they're constructed, shutters will almost always last longer than blinds.
- Shutters are an impressive, permanent window dressing that can add value and visual appeal to your home.
Advantages of Roller Blinds
If you're looking for a cost-effective window dressing that's suitable for almost any window, roller blinds are the perfect solution. Some of the benefits of roller blinds include:
- Roller blinds are available in a wide range of patterns and colours. This enables them to work well with any interior, as well as provide an attractive accent.
- Roller blinds offer excellent value and are often more economical than other window dressings.
- When rolled down, roller blinds provide a good degree of protection from sunlight. If additional protection is required, it's possible to buy blackout blinds.
- Roller blinds act as an insulating layer, ensuring your interior temperature isn't affected by the outside weather conditions.
